The University of Manchester, one of the UK’s leading universities, recently celebrated its 200-year anniversary with an alumni meet in Mumbai. This event underscored the University’s strong ties with India and highlighted its ongoing commitment to fostering India-UK student mobility, as well as partnerships with Indian institutes and industry.

The alumni meet in Mumbai was organised as a part of the global and year-long celebrations of The University of Manchester’s marking 200 years of legacy, reinforcing its commitment to global education and the enduring connections between India and the UK. With ongoing collaborations and a growing Indian student community, the University looks forward to many more years of fruitful partnerships and shared success.

Alumni from across India gathered at the Mumbai meet to reconnect with their alma mater and share their achievements. Dr. Vivek Koncherry, CEO, Graphene Innovations Manchester (GIM), alumni spokesperson said, “University of Manchester has given me everything and made me a good scientist. The University has given me strong backing to commercialise my ideas and provide support globally with people always ready to help. I will always belong here at University of Manchester because I have learned everything here and have access to resources, experts and talent.”

The University of Manchester’s relationship with India has deep roots, and this event is a testament to the vibrant exchange of ideas and talent between the two regions. With a growing number of Indian students choosing Manchester as their academic destination, the University remains dedicated to providing a rich and diverse learning environment that benefits all its students.

Professor Dame Nancy Rothwell, President and Vice-Chancellor of The University of Manchester, expressed her enthusiasm for the event, stating, “We are delighted to celebrate our 200th anniversary in Mumbai with our esteemed alumni. This event symbolises our ongoing commitment to fostering strong connections with India. Our partnerships with Indian educational institutions and companies are integral to our mission of promoting global collaboration and knowledge exchange.”

Over the years The University of Manchester has established significant partnerships with Indian academic institutions like Indian Institute of Science, IIT Kharagpur and Tata Medical Centre, Kolkata. These collaborations range from joint research projects to student exchange programs, contributing to innovation and academic excellence. The University’s partnerships in India also extend to leading corporates/conglomerates like Tata Steel. Recently the University’s Faculty of Humanities also signed a MoU with Ashoka University.

Commenting on the MoU, Prof. Angelia Wilson, Associate Dean for Internationalisation, Faculty of Humanities, said, “We are excited to work in collaboration with colleagues at Ashoka University in the co-production of knowledge through research and teaching initiatives.  We celebrate Ashoka’s commitment to liberal arts and humanities education as well as its growing research reputation in science, technology and entrepreneurship.”
