On the occasion World Environment Day, Shiv Nadar University, Delhi-NCR, India’s premier multidisciplinary research university celebrates its appointment as a Global Co-Chair for Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6: Clean Water and Sanitation by the United Nations Academic Impact (UNAI).

The appointment places the university among 20 eminent institutions worldwide recognized for their outstanding contributions to the UN’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Selected from a highly competitive pool of over 330 applicants representing 17 countries and six continents, Shiv Nadar University, Delhi – NCR is one of only two Indian universities chosen — a testament to its leadership in sustainability and global influence in advancing the SDGs.

The university stood out for its integrated approach to water sustainability, combining pioneering research, innovative community partnerships, and environmentally conscious campus practices to address urgent challenges around water access and management.

As Global Co-Chair for SDG 6, the university will collaborate with fellow institutions to lead global research, policy dialogue, and strategic initiatives promoting clean water and sanitation. The three-year co-chair term extends through December 2027 and is part of the UNAI SDG Hub Network — a global platform comprising over 1,700 institutions across more than 150 countries.

Following this recognition, Professor Ananya Mukherjee, Vice Chancellor, Shiv Nadar University, Delhi-NCR said, “This is a proud moment for all of us at Shiv Nadar University, Delhi – NCR. It reaffirms our commitment towards shaping a sustainable future, not just in words, but through action. As the Global Co-Chair for SDG 6, we are honoured to collaborate with the United Nations Academic Impact and contribute meaningfully to global water leadership and the broader mission of sustainable development.”

“Shiv Nadar University’s academic excellence, rigorous research in the areas of water access and sustainable use, and commitment to educating global citizens will contribute greatly to our shared mission of addressing some of the world’s most challenging problems,” noted Robert Skinner, Officer-in-Charge of the Outreach Division, United Nations Department of Global Communications.

This global recognition strengthens the University’s standing as a thought leader in environmental sustainability and its consistent commitment towards creating knowledge that transforms lives and communities.
