The Hyderabad-based Dr. K. V. Rao Scientific Society (KVRSS), a non-profit organisation dedicated to nurturing scientific inquiry and recognising young talent, marked its 26th anniversary with a first-of-its-kind presentation, “Math Meets Movement,” at the University of Hyderabad’s Gachibowli campus last weekend.

The innovative dance performance brought mathematical concepts such as symmetry, geometry, patterns, sequences, rhythm and spatial relationships to life through movement, demonstrating that science and art are not separate disciplines but complementary ways of understanding and interpreting the world. By translating abstract mathematical ideas into choreography, the presentation showed how complex concepts can become intuitive, engaging and memorable.

The performance reflects the philosophy behind SMART (Science Meets ART), a KVRSS initiative built on the belief that students learn science most effectively when they can see it, imagine it and create it. The initiative reinforces the Society’s long-standing conviction that science education becomes more meaningful when curiosity is combined with creativity.

By integrating the arts with STEM education, KVRSS aims to encourage students to look beyond textbooks and discover the beauty of science through imagination, expression and experiential learning.

The idea for the performance emerged from a simple but thought-provoking question: Can mathematics be expressed through dance? Pursuing this vision, KVRSS approached J. Anuradha, Vice Chancellor of the University of Hyderabad and an internationally acclaimed Kuchipudi exponent. Inspired by the concept, she encouraged the development of the collaboration.

The Society subsequently partnered with P. B. Vaishnavi, Assistant Professor of Dance at GITAM Hyderabad, who, together with her team, transformed mathematical ideas into expressive movement, rhythm and choreography.

KVRSS expects “Math Meets Movement” to become another milestone in its continuing efforts to make science education experiential, interdisciplinary and accessible to young learners.

Established in 2001 in memory of K. V. Rao, a distinguished scientist of the Geological Survey of India and a strong advocate of multidisciplinary research, the Dr. K. V. Rao Scientific Society has spent the past 26 years promoting scientific temper and advancing STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) education among school students, college learners and young researchers under the age of 30.
