The James Dyson Award given annually has been opened for entries this year. This competition is open to current engineering and design students, and those without four years of graduating, to design something that solves a problem. The James Dyson Award runs in 27 countries including India and regions worldwide.

Not only does Dyson provides a platform for students of the engineering/ product design/ industrial design verticals to develop problem-solving inventions that challenge convention, and but also provides an opportunity to showcase these entries on a global stage.

Candidates can apply through an online application via the James Dyson Award website. The Entrants should concisely explain what their invention is, how it works, and their development process with imagery to support their application. The best entrants should be able to show evidence of physical prototyping as well as sketches and CAD.  The candidates must be, or have been within the last four years, enrolled for at least one semester in an undergraduate or graduate engineering or design program at a university in a country or region chosen to participate in the James Dyson Award. In the case of team entries, all members of the team must be, or have been within the last four years, enrolled for at least one semester in an undergraduate or graduate program at a university in a country or region chosen to participate in the James Dyson Award. One will need to be nominated and registered as the team member.

From each of the participating country’s an independent panel of jury members identify a national winner, and two runners-up after evaluating the entries on the parameters, which are standard across all participating markets. All three entries from each market are considered for the final round, out of which 20 entries are then shortlisted.  In addition to the International winner, and two runners-up, we will also recognise a sustainability award, starting from this edition. This recognises the most sustainable invention this year, and celebrates the determination of our entrants to create more environmentally conscious designs.

The Prize:

The 27 national winners receive £2000 as the prize money; while the International winner receives £30,000, and an additional £5000 for their university. The new sustainability winner prize money is also worth £30,000.
