They’re curious. They’re hopeful. They’re confused. And they’re definitely not cheating. On the occasion of International AI Appreciation Day, global next-gen skills learning platform, BrightCHAMPS, releases its #StudentsSpeakAI report, busting stereotypes about how children today are using AI. It is the world’s largest student-led survey on AI in education to date — spanning 1,425 students across 29 countries, including India, Vietnam, Indonesia, UAE, and the US — and offers deep insights into the digital hearts and minds of Gen Alpha.
So, what did the students actually say?
- 58% students globally are already using AI to support their education—especially for homework, assignments, and deepening classroom understanding.
- 95% Indian students say they’ve never used AI to cheat. In fact, most students worldwide (86%) echo this sentiment.
- 38% Indian students are worried about the future of jobs because of AI. Globally, that anxiety is mirrored by 36%.
- Only 34% students globally understand how AI works—even though one-third use it regularly.
- 56% students say they need help navigating the AI wave—and not just from schools or parents.
“For years, we’ve debated whether kids are ‘cheating’ with AI. The report reveals that students are integrating AI not as a quick-fix or a short-cut, but as a learning companion. Homework help remains the top use case, followed by language learning and content creation. In India, 63% students use AI regularly—with ChatGPT emerging as the most-used tool (62%).
But even as usage rises, 29% of students worldwide don’t cross-check AI-generated answers. And 20% admit to believing wrong answers from AI tools. In India, 50% of students struggle to distinguish between AI-generated content and real media.
What do they want?
- 75% of Indian students believe AI should be part of the school curriculum.
- Only 10% feel confident in their AI knowledge.
- A staggering 50% of Indian students can’t tell if an image/video is real or AI-generated.
The students are not just asking for better AI tools. They’re asking for better support systems—frameworks that can help them become critical thinkers, responsible users, and confident learners in an age where information is infinite but insight is scarce.
