Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) is launching an industry-oriented Web-Enabled MTech in E-Mobility (WEMEM) for Working Professionals. A unique feature of the course is the strong relevance of content for Industry Professionals.
The MTech program was conceived with inputs from academic and industry experts and would be continuously upgraded based on industry needs.
26th May 2024 is the last date to register for the batch starting in September 2024. The Program Brochure can be accessed at https://code.iitm.ac.in/assets/wbmt/Brochure.pdf.
Those interested can apply for the program through the following link – https://code.iitm.ac.in/emobility.
Highlighting the need for this program, Prof. V. Kamakoti, Director, IIT Madras, said “IIT Madras has been at the forefront of conducting upskilling programs for Working Professionals in the domain of E-Mobility through several Certificate programs. Participants of these programs and the Automotive Industry have been asking for an MTech program as a natural follow-up. We are happy to launch WEMEM and hope that it further drives our mission of accelerating human resource development in our Nation in this domain.”
This degree program, being offered through IIT Madras’ Centre for Outreach and Digital Education (CODE), has been designed to meet the academic rigour expected of an MTech degree from IIT Madras while orienting the courses to practice. The Department of Engineering Design, IIT Madras, is coordinating WEMEM.
Further, Prof. Prathap Haridoss, Dean, Academic Courses, IIT Madras, said, “WEMEM has been carefully structured to meet the academic credit requirements of an MTech degree from IIT Madras. This includes core and elective theory courses, labs, and projects. In line with the New Education Policy, we have also enabled an intermediate exit in the form of a Post Graduate Diploma in E-Mobility.”
Elaborating on the Program, Prof. Devendra Jalihal, Chair, Centre for Outreach and Digital Education (CODE), IIT Madras, said, “CODE has been the Nodal office at IIT Madras for all non-campus academic and outreach programs. We have been offering several Executive Education Programs and Web-Enabled MTech Programs for Industry Professionals and we are pleased to add WEMEM to this list.”
Prof. Andrew Thangaraj, Associate Chair, Centre for Outreach and Digital Education (CODE), IIT Madras, added, “To ensure a good balance between theory and practice, we have brought in Experts from Industry to deliver a few courses. There will be regular assignments as well as exams for each course, ensuring a robust pedagogy.”
The Program would run over 7 Academic Terms, with up to 3 Academic Terms in a Calendar year. The first batch will start in the beginning of September and the participants will be selected based on a Test on fundamental Mathematics and Physics Principles.
Prof. Karthick Athmanathan, Professor of Practice, IIT Madras, and Advisor, WEMEM said, “WEMEM is structured to offer the required flexibility to Working Professionals while ensuring the quality of an IIT Madras MTech. Considering the work-related commitments of participants, they would need to attend live classes with faculty on Saturdays.”
Elaborating on this program, Prof. C. S. Shankar Ram, Head, Department of Engineering Design, IIT Madras, said, “The Department has organically evolved as the nodal department for various E-Mobility initiatives at IIT Madras. A core group of full-time faculty, Professors of Practice, Adjunct Faculty and Guest Faculty would be delivering the content. The department has also established various labs that would enable hands-on learning as part of this MTech.”
