Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel on Jan 17 inaugurated the GIFT International Fintech Institute (GIFT IFI) and the GIFT International Fintech Innovation Hub (GIFT IFIH) at Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT City), marking a significant milestone in India’s journey to becoming a global leader in financial technology. These initiatives, supported by the Asian Development Bank (ADB), are poised to transform the fintech landscape by fostering innovation, developing a skilled workforce, and strengthening GIFT City’s position as a premier international fintech hub.

The launch of the GIFT IFI and GIFT IFIH is set to further elevate India’s standing in the global fintech arena, reinforcing GIFT City’s role as a centrepiece in the nation’s economic and technological growth story.

The GIFT IFI, led by a consortium comprising Ahmedabad University, IIT Gandhinagar, and the University of California, San Diego, will focus on providing world-class training programmes. The institute’s courses, set to commence in January 2025, are designed to equip professionals with industry-aligned skills essential for navigating the evolving global financial sector.

Complementing the IFI is the GIFT IFIH, spearheaded by Plug and Play, a global accelerator platform. The fintech incubator and accelerator will support start-ups by providing critical resources, mentorship, and access to expansive networks, enabling them to scale and thrive in the competitive fintech landscape.

As part of the GIFT IFIH’s launch, 10 innovative startups have joined the foundation batch, representing the United States, UAE, Singapore, and India. Starting January 2025, the GIFT IFI will  offer several courses to build fintech talent, including Fintech Foundations, Technology for Fintech, and AI & ML in Fintech, underscoring GIFT City’s global commitment to fostering fintech innovation, collaboration, and skill development.

Highlighting GIFT City’s broader vision, Tapan Ray, MD and Group CEO of GIFT City, said, “The inauguration of the GIFT IFI and GIFT IFIH underscores our commitment to building a globally connected, resilient fintech ecosystem. With the support of renowned partners in education and incubation, we are not just nurturing talent but also fostering cutting-edge innovations that will redefine the financial services industry. These initiatives are a testament to GIFT City’s evolution as a key driver of India’s fintech revolution.”

Professor Pankaj Chandra, Vice Chancellor, Ahmedabad University who attended the ceremony said, “This initiative bridges the gap between finance and technology, integrating cutting-edge research and practical expertise. At Ahmedabad University, we bring to the fore our interdisciplinary research capabilities in finance, AI, data science, and practice-based approaches, combined with industry collaboration. This Institute will empower professionals and graduates to solve real-world challenges and lead the future of fintech.”

Aarti Mehra, Deputy Country Director, ADB hoped it  will accelerate the development of an international financial centre to serve Viksit Bharat.

The GIFT IFI and GIFT IFIH have been conceptualised to address critical industry needs. They aim to deliver industry-aligned training programmes, promote applied research, and create a conducive environment for start-ups, with a particular focus on empowering women entrepreneurs. These initiatives also seek to bridge the gap between academia and industry by fostering collaboration and encouraging partnerships that drive innovation and sectoral competitiveness.

The GIFT IFI will work closely with industry leaders and global academic institutions to design programmes that cater to early and mid-career professionals. Similarly, the GIFT IFIH will create a platform for collaboration between banks, payments corporations, venture capitalists, and accelerators, catalysing transformative solutions and nurturing future fintech unicorns.

As part of GIFT City’s larger vision, these initiatives are expected to contribute to employment generation, workforce productivity, and the growth of innovative start-ups. With its state-of-the-art infrastructure, ease of doing business, and robust regulatory framework, GIFT City continues to attract global attention as a model for financial and technological excellence.
