Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) has established a ‘Career Pathway Centre’ integrating all placement, internship and student career development activities. The student-run Entrepreneurship Cell (E-Cell) of the Institute has also been integrated into this newly-established body.

By bringing together all these activities, the Institute has established a unified platform that will provide extensive assistance to students in diverse career trajectories. This initiative is a pivotal step towards providing students with the opportunities, tools and skillset they need to succeed in the ever-evolving professional landscape.

Speaking about this newly-established centre, Prof. Sathyanarayana N. Gummadi, Dean (Students), IIT Madras, said, “The Career Pathway Centre, with its three verticals, equips students to face the evolving professional landscape. It provides a dynamic platform for exploring both traditional career paths and entrepreneurial opportunities, instilling a strong support system for students. Our aim is to inspire students to pursue their aspirations, whether it is launching a start-up or building a successful career in established enterprises.”

The Career Development Cell offers essential soft skills training to complement academic readiness, and the Entrepreneurship Cell serves as a testing ground for students to explore self-employment opportunities. Through this centre, students will benefit from comprehensive training, networking opportunities, entrepreneurial ventures, and enhanced employability.

The objective of Career Pathway Centre is to empower students to independently navigate and decide their career paths. It has been designed to provide students with knowledge, essential skills, and exposure to an entrepreneurial environment, all located in one facility. The Placement and Internship office facilitates students in establishing connections with companies to explore potential career prospects.

The key functions of the newly-established Career Pathway Centre include

  • Professionally equip students with skill development by CD Cell led by Prof. Arun Menon, Dept. of Civil Engineering, Advisor, CDC & CDC-R
  • Honing the Entrepreneurship efforts of potential student fraternity by E-Cell, led by Prof. Richa Agrawal, Dept. of Management Studies, Advisor, E-Cell
  • Facilitating hiring of students by Recruiters for Placement and Internship by Placement and Internship (P&I) office led by Prof. Sathyan Subbiah, Advisor, P&I and Prof. P. Murugavel, Dept. of Physics, Co-Advisor (P&I)

Participating in Career Development workshops provides students with the opportunity to connect with a varied group of mentors comprising accomplished entrepreneurs and experienced professionals. This exposure enables students to acquire a diverse set of skills, knowledge, and resources essential for success in today’s professional landscape.

Furthermore, these workshops encourage innovation, enterprise, and entrepreneurship by actively nurturing and assisting the growth of start-ups. The centre presents a range of skill development programs, covering activities such as resume building and mock interviews along with opportunities to connect with a broad network of industry professionals and potential investors.

Speaking about the CPC, Mr. Mevit Mathew, Academic Affairs Secretary IIT Madras, said, “Our emphasis is on catering to all students with varying goals and aspirations. Be it placements or entrepreneurship or higher studies, our various teams work together to open the best doors for our students and help them with their preparation.”

Mr. Poshadri Chatri, Research Affairs Secretary, IIT Madras, said, “We are intensifying our focus on PhD placements through new profile on boarding, offering essential soft skills training via CDC-R, and strategically pursuing faculty positions, internships with our dedicated Academic Placement team. This reflects our steadfast commitment to excellence in research and academia.”
