Overall, 23% female representation in the 2025 graduating class highlights the Institute’s focus on gender diversity and inclusivity.
Welcoming the graduating class to the grand event, Shri. BVR Mohan Reddy, Chairperson, Board of Governors, IIT Roorkee, said, “Convocation is a moment of pride and responsibility. IIT Roorkee must drive Atmanirbhar Bharat by creating innovations that are affordable, scalable, and impactful. IIT Roorkee has a rich legacy of over 178 years, drawing talented students from all over the country and abroad for its undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programs.
Presenting the Convocation Report, Prof. K.K. Pant highlighted IIT Roorkee’s global stature and accomplishments with a QS World Ranking 339 and the top NIRF rank in Architecture & Planning for the fourth consecutive year. During the year, the Institute filed 146 patents, received ₹399 crore in research funding, and launched projects in quantum technology, clean energy and hydrogen, defence, resource management, and sustainability.
A major recognition this year was IIT Roorkee being designated as a Centre of Excellence (CoE) under the National Critical Mineral Mission (NCMM) by the Ministry of Mines, joining a select group of premier institutions tasked with developing technologies vital for India’s clean energy, semiconductor, mobility, defence, and space sectors. The CoE will focus on recovering critical minerals from ores and e-waste using sustainable, green approaches, leveraging interdisciplinary expertise to promote a circular economy and reduce import dependence. The Institute also advanced research in nuclear applications, earth sciences, slope stability, Himalayan sustainability, Ganga river studies, and the earthquake early warning system. It implemented the latest educational technology (AI in pedagogy), revised the curriculum, and introduced the flexi credit system. Entrepreneurship thrived with 180+ start-ups worth over ₹4,700 crore, while placements saw 1,100 job offers, including 12 internationals. Diversity was strengthened with 178 women Ph.D. graduates, supported by the Golden Girl and SAKUNTALA Fellowships. Alumni contributed ₹31 crore, while initiatives like community outreach, rural development, Unnat Bharat Abhiyan, Anushruti Academy, and the ASMITA Skill Academy reinforced IIT Roorkee’s social impact.
With strong industry linkages, major MoUs, and nationally significant research, Prof. Pant reaffirmed IIT Roorkee’s commitment to a sustainable, inclusive, and innovation-driven future aligned with Viksit Bharat 2047.
Presenting the Convocation report, Prof. K.K. Pant, Director of IIT Roorkee, said, “Convocation is a celebration of both achievement and aspiration. At IIT Roorkee, our mission is to deliver world-class education and research and ensure that innovation directly addresses the nation’s strategic priorities from sustainability and clean energy to critical minerals, defence, and disaster resilience. I am immensely proud of our graduates, who will carry forward this legacy of excellence and play a transformative role in building a Viksit Bharat by 2047.”
Delivering the Convocation address, Chief Guest Dr. Jitendra Singh said, “With nearly 240 startups associated with you, out of 1.7 lakh across the country, IIT Roorkee is making a huge contribution to India’s startup movement. Your nine centers of excellence, your pioneering work in disaster risk, resilience and sustainability, and your deep engagement with local communities through initiatives like Vibrant Villages make you a true role model of an academic institution. Located in the Himalayas, your role is not only vital during disasters but equally significant in what I call a ‘peacetime calendar,’ where institutions like yours help build resilience, sustainability, and growth for the nation.”
He further said, “Today, as the Director elaborated in his report, the institute has been conferred, for the fourth consecutive year, the Most Innovative Institute Award by the Confederation of Indian Industry, along with the Cartier Achiever Award for Excellence of Women in STEM. And just last evening, in the national rankings, you figured at number six. This itself is evidence enough of the remarkable consistency with which this institution has maintained its standards over the years.”
Speaking at the Convocation 2025 of IIT Roorkee, Guest of Honour Prof. (Dr.) Nirmaljeet Singh Kalsi, IAS (Retd.), expressed his deep gratitude on returning to his alma mater. He remarked that IIT Roorkee, with its 176-year legacy, continues to be a symbol of academic excellence and national service. “It is a matter of immense pride to stand here today—not only as an alumnus but as someone who has had the privilege to contribute to India’s education and skilling transformation,” he said. He praised the institute’s role in producing leaders across sectors and thanked the faculty for nurturing generations of innovators and problem-solvers.
Addressing the graduating class, Prof. Kalsi urged them to uphold the values of continuous learning, integrity, and nation-building. “You are not just receiving degrees—you are inheriting a responsibility. Carry forward the legacy of IIT Roorkee with humility, purpose, and courage,” he said. Congratulating the students and their families, he reminded them of India’s shared national vision of *Viksit Bharat@2047, and called on them to lead with character, curiosity, and compassion in shaping a strong, self-reliant, and inclusive India.”
Encouraging the graduates to build an Atmanirbhar Bharat, Chief Guest for the Convocation Award Ceremony, Shri Pankaj Agarwal, Secretary, said, “True Atmanirbharta will come not from assembling the tools of others, but from creating our own innovations that lead the world. In today’s world, technology has become a strategic pillar of national strength. The challenge before us is not merely to ‘Make in India’, but to Invent in India, Design in India, and Lead from India. You, the young innovators of today, are the architects of Viksit Bharat 2047.”
