Jamia Millia Islamia student protest demanding reinstating students union in the University has come to an end following the University’s order announcing a detailed schedule as demanded by the protesting students. Following the announcement, the protest site turned into jubilations as it was celebrated as victory of their hunger strike of 18 days, which got widespread support from student activists as well as students. The university doesn’t have a student union for past 20 years though there are departmental associations.
As per the latest order, the constitution will be prepared by May 15th next year and elections held within six weeks of new academic session from July 16, 2027. The ongoing disciplinary actions have also been revoked.

Congratulatory messages have started the moment the order was announced. The students of Jamia are being congratulated for their victory. The Jamia administration has finally been forced to bow down before the students after an 18-day hunger strike, and the student union has been restored. Special congratulations to the students who sat on the hunger strike and to Zishan and Faizan who went to jail, and also congratulations to those students who marked their presence in this movement and made it a massive one.
Registrar of Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI), Mahtab Alam Rizvi speaking to reporters said, “Regarding online classes, as I mentioned directly to the students, the Diwali vacation extends until November 8, 2026. Once our students return, I will request them to resume, and we will immediately transition back to offline classes.”
