Quantum Sensing Hub at IIT Bombay kick-offs its operations

Marking a significant milestone in India’s journey towards quantum excellence, the Qmet Tech Foundation, a Section 8 (not-for-profit) company established by IIT Bombay under the National Quantum Mission (NQM), has officially commenced its activities. Aimed at bridging fundamental research and practical applications in quantum technology and positioning India as a global leader in this domain, Qmet serves as a leadership hub for translational research, managing funds, and promoting interdisciplinary collaboration among 16 member institutes and 40 researchers located across India.

The kickoff meeting united researchers to define a shared vision, set milestones, and discuss collaborative frameworks. The event was inaugurated by Prof. Abhay Karandikar, Secretary of DST, with the Dean (R&D) and Dean (Strategy) of IIT Bombay also in attendance, emphasizing the institute’s strong commitment to the growth and success of Qmet Tech Foundation.

“The establishment of Qmet Tech Foundation marks a significant milestone in India’s journey towards quantum excellence. By uniting some of the country’s brightest minds, we aim to create groundbreaking advancements in Quantum Sensing and Metrology that will not only benefit India but also contribute to the global quantum ecosystem,” stated Prof. Abhay Karandikar, Secretary, DST during his address.

Prof Kasturi Saha – Project Director of Qmet Tech Foundations quoted, “Qmet aims to lead globally in quantum sensing, metrology, and imaging by advancing technology, workforce training, and innovation. It seeks to bridge research and applications, fostering international collaborations, driving transformative solutions in healthcare, national security, and scientific discovery, and positioning India as a quantum revolution leader.”

Kiran Shesh, CEO – Qmet Tech Foundation says – “A key factor driving its success is the strong emphasis on collaboration, cooperation, and effective communication. The kick-off meeting is designed to create a shared sense of purpose and inspire enthusiasm to achieve the common goal.”
