The Central University of Tamil Nadu (CUTN) recently held a one-day seminar on “Agasthiyar and Siddha Medicine,” part of the Kashi Tamil Sangamam 3.0.  The event, a joint initiative of the Departments of Tamil and History, brought together experts and enthusiasts to discuss the contributions of Agasthiyar to the Siddha system of medicine.

Professor M. Krishnan, Vice-Chancellor of CUTN, highlighted Agasthiyar’s multifaceted contributions, emphasizing his influence on the Tamil language and his significant role in the development of traditional medicine and its impact on human well-being. He noted that while ancient Indian texts document various treatments within Siddha, Ayurveda, and Unani systems, the absence of consistent documentation has sometimes resulted in these treatments being attributed to other sources. Professor Krishnan also emphasized the medicinal value found in many traditional foods.

Dr. N. Venkatappan, Professor of Anatomy at the Government Siddha Medical College, Palayamkottai, Tirunelveli, delivered a special address. He detailedly explained Agasthiyar’s pioneering contributions to Siddha medicine and discussed its continuing relevance in contemporary healthcare practices.
