Indian Maritime University (IMU) with headquarters in Chennai and a recognized Centre of Excellence on Sep 26 witnessed graduating ceremony of its 2,198 students from IMU’s four schools, spread across six campuses and affiliated institutions. Among those receiving their degrees were four PhD scholars and one MS (Research) graduate.

Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Shri Sarbananda Sonowal, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest and delivered an inspiring address to the young graduates. T.K. Ramachandran, Secretary (MoPSW), senior officials, special guests, faculty members, and the proud families of the graduating students were present the event.

The convocation not only celebrated IMU’s academic achievements but also highlighted the Ministry’s accomplishments in 2024–25. These includes:

  • Handling of over 850 million tonnes of cargo,
  • Capacity enhancement at major ports, and
  • Successful implementation of the Sagarmala Programme with more than 800 projects worth over ₹5.5 lakh crore.

In his address, the Union Minister said, “India is sailing into a new era of maritime excellence — with bold reforms, green and digital ports, and renewed advancements in shipbuilding and research. The Indian Maritime University, a recognised Centre of Excellence stands at the heart of this transformation, producing not just graduates but leaders who will shape the nation. Under the Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047, our graduates will be the anchors as India emerges as a leading global maritime power.”

The convocation concluded with an atmosphere of pride and promise as graduates stepped forward to contribute to India’s growing maritime sector.
