Indian Institute of Science Education and Research Bhopal through its Centre for Science and Society (CS2) organized the Summer Outreach Camp 2023 from May 15th to May 20th 2023. The camp aims to inspire students from classes IX, X, and XI by emphasizing the crucial role of science in society.
Around 130 students from various schools across the nation participated in the camp. These young minds got the opportunity to explore fascinating topics in natural and engineering sciences through a combination of engaging lectures, informative talks, and hands-on laboratory experiments and demonstrations. Furthermore, the program provided critical insights from the Humanities and Social Sciences, complementing the scientific exposure.
This year, the Summer Outreach Camp also extended its support to tribal students from CM Rise Schools in Madhya Pradesh and a total of 17 students were selected to participate in this enriching event, providing them with a unique platform to broaden their scientific horizons.
During the camp, students actively interacted with each other and senior students on campus, fostering a vibrant and informal learning environment. Exciting evening activities, including painting competitions, quiz contests, open mic sessions, and sports activities, added an element of fun and camaraderie to the overall experience. The ceremony concluded with the distribution of certificates and prizes to the participants and the volunteers, recognizing their dedication and commitment throughout the camp
Prof. Siva Umapathy, Director, IISER Bhopal, whiel welcoming the initiative said, “IISERs were created with the purpose of providing world-class education in science to students in India. The Institutes conduct research in several cutting-edge areas of science and technology. The purpose of this camp is to inspire and motivate students to pursue careers in science and technology and provide them with an opportunity to interact with eminent scientists and researchers. By providing such platforms to school students, they would be able to explore the available opportunities in right mode and learn and understand science in a creative and engaging way.”
While interacting with the students, Prof. Raghvir Singh Tomar, Head, Centre for Science and Society, IISER Bhopal, said, “I request students to implement the techniques which you have learnt at IISER Bhopal and feel free to contact us to clarify any further queries. We have been doing this activity for the last seven years but the students’ feedback is something which helps us to continuous improvement and a desire to provide the best learning experience possible. I hope the students are benefiting greatly from the knowledge and expertise shared by the faculty.”
