GD Goenka University’s School of Law recently hosted of the VII GD Goenka – CIArb (India) International Commercial Arbitration Moot Competition, focusing on IP Arbitration in the Pharmaceuticals Sector. The event witnessed significant participation from 34 teams and 102 students from prominent institutions like Government Law College, Mumbai, National Law Institute University, Bhopal, National Law School of India University, Bangalore, University of Mumbai Law Academy, among others.

The CIArb 2025 competition concluded with outstanding achievements, with Delhi Metropolitan Education emerging as the Winner and Dr. B.R. Ambedkar National Law University, Sonepat, securing the Runner-Up position. Sanjana Kamble of NLSIU Bangalore was honoured as the Best Speaker, while the Best Memorial award went to National Law Institute University, Bhopal. Additionally, Sudhanshu Gangurde of Symbiosis Law School, Pune, was named the Best Researcher.

The competition was judged by more than 50 judges from varied legal backgrounds including Arbitrators, Advocates in the Supreme Court, Faculties having Doctorates in Alternate Dispute Resolution, and a Sitting Judge of a High Court.

 Justice N. Kotiswar Singh from the Supreme Court of India  graced the inaugural session as the Chief Guest and  Justice Tejas Karia from the Delhi High Court, as the Guest of Honour.

 Justice A. Muhamed Mustaque, Kerala High Court Judge, was present at the valedictory function as the Chief Guest.

The ceremony also featured esteemed Guests of Honour: Honourable Justice B. P. Singh, Retired Supreme Court Judge, Mr. Anil Xavier, President of the Indian Institute of Arbitration & Mediation,and Dr. Lalit Bhasin, President of the Society of Indian Law Firms.

 Emphasising the significance of moot court competitions in shaping future legal professionals, Mr. Nipun Goenka, Managing Director of GD Goenka Group, said, ” By engaging in real-world arbitration scenarios, our law students develop critical thinking, strategic planning, and effective communication skills that are essential for their professional growth.”  “The moot court competition challenges students to think strategically, research extensively, and present arguments effectively. It not only strengthens their professional ethics but also provides valuable networking opportunities with experienced professionals and industry experts,” said Dr. Jayaram, Dean of the School of Law, GD Goenka University.

The CIArb-GDGU Arbitration Moot Competition is designed to give participants a comprehensive understanding of arbitration. This includes preparing memorials, navigating procedural complexities and engaging in activities that echo actual arbitration practices. By the end of the competition, students gained a deeper understanding of the field, and the functional skills required for a thriving career in law.
